Keeping an eye on education

Kozol on education and equity

The third-world conditions in America’s poorest public schools have been chronicled with unflinching honesty by author and educator Jonathan Kozol.

Now Kozol is coming to the area – to give a free public lecture at Mount Saint Mary College at noon Aug. 21.

I read his book Savage Inequalities when I was just starting to cover education – I’ve been kozol_jonathan.jpghaunted by it ever since.

In Newburgh he’s going to talk about the themes of his latest book: Letters to a Young Teacher: The Challenges and Rich Rewards of a Beautiful Profession – the Service of Children and the Thirst for Justice.

Kozol is a long-time commentator on public education in the United States. He is the author of Amazing Grace: The Lives of Children and the Conscience of a Nation, and The Shame of A Nation.

The lecture is part of the inaugural Lucy DiPaola Institute for Professional Development for educators Aug. 20-23.

I’m doing a phone interview with him Thursday afternoon and will put up and audio file here as soon I can. (As soon as Diana teaches me how.)

Kozol is a great man, educator, writer and advocate. Do you have any details on the lecture, time and place? Thanks

He’ll speak at noon August 21 in the Aquinas Hall Theatre on the campus.
