PEEKSKILL DISTRICT PLANS VOTE ON SALE OF PARK STREET SCHOOL
Peekskill, NY (August 20, 2007) — The Peekskill City School District will hold a public vote on Tuesday, Oct. 9, seeking public approval to sell the former Park Street School to Mount Olivet Baptist Church.
In order to sell a school building, a Board of Education must obtain voter approval. Voting will take place at Peekskill High School, 1072 Elm St. between 7 a.m. and 9 p.m. To vote, individuals must be registered to vote in either the school elections or general election. Those not registered to vote may due so on Wednesday, Sept. 19 from 3 to 9 p.m. at the Administration Center, 1031 Elm St..
Mount Olivet is under contract with the District to purchase Park Street for $1.3 million. The church’s pastor, the Rev. Adolphus C. Lacey, said the congregation was studying how best to use the building. Possible uses might be as an administrative site or a family life center, he said.
The former school, at 1432 Park Street, lies across the street from Mount Olivet.
Park Street School was constructed in 1925. Over time, Park Street had become an outmoded setting without adequate instructional facilities. In 2005, the District closed the building, at the time serving as an alternative secondary school, and established the Twilight Academy, which operates from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the high school.
“We are delighted that a respected church in our community will be able to put the Park Street building to good use, said Superintendent of Schools Judith Johnson. “This is a moment of common purpose and common commitment to our community. It’s an agreement mutually beneficial to both the District and Mount Olivet.
