From Purchase College…
Andrew Roninson, Latham, N.Y., is the winner of a 2009 James Moody Scholarship. He is a Jazz Studies major at the Purchase College Conservatory of Music, State University of New York. He is a graduate of Shaker High School where he received a Louis Armstrong Jazz Award.
The James Moody Scholarship represents a desire by the jazz legend and his wife Linda Moody to create opportunities for the next generation of jazz masters by providing financial assistance and visibility for students of outstanding ability and good character.
Mr. Roninson had the privilege of performing with James Moody at the “James Moody & Friends” benefit concert at B. B. King Blues Club & Grill the night the scholarship was awarded. He played a piano solo and accompanied the musicians on several selections. Among those performing that night were: Jon Faddis, trumpet; Randy Brecker, trumpet; Paquito D’Rivera, clarinet; Yotam Silberstein, guitar; and Todd Coolman, bass.
Andrew has recorded or played professionally in every music genre: jam band, funk, pop, folk, ska, choral, hip-hop, and singer-songwriter.
While at Purchase he has studied with Charles Blenzig, Pete Malinverni, David Hazeltine, Steve Wilson, Jim Rontondi, and Todd Coolman.
He has been a musical director and played keyboards for various theatrical productions including a musical he co-wrote called “Exorcism on Aisle Five” and the Purchase College production of “The Rocky Horror Picture Show.”
This summer he will serve as musical director for “High School Musical” at Park Playhouse, Albany’s largest public outdoor theatre.
While at Shaker High School he studied with Michael Clement, Lee Shaw and Adrian Cohen.
