The Mount Pleasant Cottage School is expanding it’s vocational program to provide more students with valuable work experience in the community.
The school is seeking additional work sites for students to start at in September. The vocational program currently has students working at Target, Wal-Mart, day care centers, toy stores and food pantries. Students work up to five days a week from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. and 1 to 3 p.m.
The students are covered by the school’s insurance and payment program in accordance with the New York State Curriculum. They are supervised by job coaches, teacher assistant’s department heads and managers.
The job site is not responsible for paying the student, but for providing work experience in relating to customers, listening to managers and following directions. The goal is to have students work in various departments at the site.
Special education teacher JoAnne White said the students gain a sense responsibility, new independence, what it takes to have and keep a job, and learn first hand how to interact with colleagues, plus the benefits of earning a paycheck.
