Former Congresswoman Sue Kelly
Visits John Jay Middle School Team Imagine
(South Salem, NY) – On Monday, February 7, 2011, Sue Kelly, Katonah resident and the former Congresswoman representing New York Congressional District #19 from 1995 to 2007 visited the John Jay Middle School social studies classes of students on the seventh grade Imagine Team.
Mrs. Kelly spoke with the students about her decision to run for Congress, the campaign and legislative process, her experiences in Washington, and the complexity of situations with which the Congress must deal. She also answered questions from students, who have been studying the Constitution and the federal government. “Sue Kelly was very important to our understanding of the government and the differences between the Senate and the House. This was very important to learning in Mr. Ley’s class. Thank you, Mrs. Kelly!” Isabella Pectol, grade 7.
David Ley, the team social studies teacher, said “We are so thankful that Mrs. Kelly has generously shared her experiences with the students. The ability of the students to interact with and ask questions to someone who has run elections and has been through the legislative processes is invaluable. Her visit made our government real to the students and helped them see that elected officials are still just ordinary people, just like the students, themselves. It’s these kinds of up-close experiences that let kids know that they, too, could run for Congress someday.”
Mrs. Kelly earned her undergraduate degree from Denison University, Granville, Ohio and her graduate degree from Sarah Lawrence College, Bronxville, N.Y. She served on the staff of Congressman Hamilton Fish of New York, whom she succeeded upon his decision to not run for re-election in 1994.
