Thirty-four local high school seniors have been named candidates in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, a non-scholarship program designed to honor the nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for academics and exceptional talent in visual, creative and performing arts.
Candidates now are in competition for one of the 141 Presidential Scholars slots. Semi-finalists will be named in early April and the finalists will be named in early May. Applications are by invitation only and based on SAT or ACT exam scores, or nomination by their chief state school officer.
Students chosen as U.S. Presidential Scholars receive an expense-paid trip to Washington, D. C. in June and the U.S. Presidential Scholars medallion at a ceremony sponsored by the White House, in commemoration of their achievements. This year’s National Recognition Weekend is set for June 15 through 18 but the date is subject to change.
The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by executive order and expanded in 1979 to include those proficient in fine arts.
