More than 200 community leaders from churches, mosques and synagogues across Westchester are planning to assemble at 7 p.m. Thursday at Greater Centennial AME Zion Church in Mount Vernon to ask Gov. Andrew Cuomo to pass legislation ensuring all youngsters have access to kindergarten.
Right now, kindergarten is not required by the state, and districts looking to cut expenses have been considering eliminating kindergarten or cutting it down from full-day to half-day.
The community leaders, banded together as Westchester United, champion legislation supported by state assemblymen and senators but being held up in the education committee.
This is the latest in a series of rallies created to draw attention to kindergarten legislation and to support requiring schools to provide kindergarten.
Greater Centennial AME Zion Church is at 114 West Fourth St., Mount Vernon. For more information, see www.westchester-united.org.
