Christopher Klein is a highly motivated, high-achieving senior at North Rockland High School. The 18-year-old does two varsity sports (swimming and golf), plays clarinet in the high school band, serves as opinion editor of the school newspaper, participates in drama society and is a triathlete. On top of all this, he’s taking three Advanced Placement courses and racking up credits that he hopes will transfer to college next fall.
By the end of his high school career, he will have taken eight AP courses — Chemistry, English, Calculus BC, Physics, Music Theory, English Literature, American History and World History.
Klein was one of 80 North Rockland students recognized earlier this month for his academic achievements by the College Board, which honors scholars who earn high marks in AP courses. He was named an AP Scholar with Honors for scoring levels 3 and 4 on his tests.
The high school itself was also recognized as an AP Honor Roll school for increasing access to advanced coursework while at the same time increasing the percentage of students earning scores of 3 or higher on AP exams. Here’s the full story from last week.
APs are viewed as more rigorous than a local college program, according to North Rockland Principal Michael Gill.
Klein loves a challenge and pushes himself hard to meet his own high standards, he told me in our interview the other day.
“I can always be doing better,” he said.
Here’s him telling it in his own words:
