Pomona Middle School in the East Ramapo school district will host a memorial volleyball tournament Tuesday, May 27, to honor Dauminique Bouvier Smalling, who died recently after battling sickle cell anemia.
Smalling was a 2008 Pomona middle school graduate and an avid volleyball fan. She died in February at age 19.
Staff in Pomona’s physical education department are organizing the tournament and donating a portion of the proceeds to Big Bend Sickle Cell Foundation.
Playoffs have been held Mondays and Tuesdays throughout May, with the final round May 20. A championship team will play against middle school staff on May 27.
The school said individuals interested in making a donation in Smalling’s name should address checks to: “Sickle Cell Foundation of the Big Bend,” 1336 Vickers Road, Tallahassee, Florida, 32305.
