Five elementary schools in the Ramapo Central school district will go head to head tomorrow, Saturday, in the district’s 39th annual elementary cross country competition.
(The event is also known as the Joseph Smith Memorial Invitational Ramapo Central Elementary Cross Country Championships. Whew, that’s a mouthful.)
The competition gives third- through sixth-graders the chance to try out cross country running – maybe they’ll join the sport in high school – and compete in varying distances according to grade level. School officials say it fosters a friendly rivalry between the schools and encourages school spirit throughout the district.
“My daughter’s been talking about it for years. It’s this big event,” said Sloatsburg resident Peter Head, father of a third-grader and a first-grader.
The competition starts at 10 a.m. Saturday at Suffern High School. Registration for the race is at 9:30 a.m.
Tonight at 6 p.m., students, parents, teachers and coaches will prep with a pep rally, pasta dinner and a showing a local “Rocky”-style video created with footage of elementary students practicing for the race.
