Here’s another East Ramapo-related community forum to add to the calendar: Wednesday (tomorrow) Jan. 28, 7 p.m. at the Spring Valley Hook & Ladder Firehouse, 7 West Furman Place, Spring Valley.
The event will be held on the third floor of the firehouse. Participants are asked to park on the street, not in the firehouse lot.
The forum is organized by Monsey resident Izzy Landau, who left the ultra-Orthodox community and now sends his kids to East Ramapo public schools.
Landau told me he intends this to be an informal, peaceful meeting to promote discussion between supporters of both the public and private schools in the East Ramapo school district. As we’ve reported closely, conflict there over school funding, inequity and control of the school board (dominated by members of the Orthodox and Hasidic communities) has garnered unprecedented state intervention in recent months.
“The objective is to get people from all sides to communicate as human beings, there will be no accusing, no yelling, no hatred,” Landau wrote on the Facebook page for the event. “Let’s show the world that we as parents really just want what’s good for our kids.”
Except for the few that are in it to rabble-rouse, “we all CAN get along,” Landau insists.
This is the second community forum this winter inspired by a desire to help unite factions within the struggling district. Green Meadow Waldorf School is holding a more formal pair of student-led and adult-facilitated discussions on Feb. 11.
