A team from Saunders Trades & Technical High School won first place in New York City FIRST’s 15th annual robotics competition at the Jacob K. Javits Convention Center over the weekend, qualifying for the championship competition in St. Louis on April 22.
The Saunders Droid Factory had the highest scoring robot among 66 teams from New York, the United Kingdom, China and Turkey. The robot, dubbed Robot Leonard, was named after the late Leonard Nimoy, star of the Star Trek TV show and movies.
The team is working to secure funding to travel to the world championship in April. Anyone wanting to help can contact Principal Steven Mazzola, at 914-376-8150.
The Saunders Droid Factory also received the Excellence in Engineering Award, given to a team that exhibits proficiency in design, functionality, and innovation.
