Chestnut Ridge Middle School held its third annual March Madness basketball tournament on Friday afternoon.
The event is named for John Boykin, a community leader, veteran and champion of children in the East Ramapo school district.
School officials said the event is held to give students a fun and healthy boost as they prepare for the annual state standardized tests later in April. It’s also educational.
“March Madness is an opportunity for our students to learn about what colleges and universities their teachers and building administrators attended and to experience a part of college excitement with our own basketball playoffs,” said Colette Politzer, Chestnut Ridge Middle School’s Library Media Specialist.
Each year, the school divides into teams named for various U.S. colleges. St. John’s University sent the school red basketball socks. Wisconsin sent posters and the New York Knicks sent Knick T-shirts for the students.
Dancers performed between games and trophies were given to the winning team.
